trayvon's father on the stand. and videotape of the three young women held captive in cleveland for a decade. you see them there right now. there they are the last pictures we saw of them ten years ago, before they were captured. alex perez has the dramatic and emotional story. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is the first time we are directly hearing from the three, young women. they say they were so overcome with emotion by the outpouring of support from around the world, they had to say something. >> i want everyone to know how happy i am to be home, with my family and my friends. it's been unbelievable. >> reporter: for the first time, this morning, we are seeing and hearing from the three, young women who lived a nightmare. >> i want to thank everyone who has helped me and my family, through this entire ordeal. everyone who has been there to support us, it's been a blessing to have such an outpouring of love and kindness. >> reporter: in a video statement, amanda berry, gina dejesus, and michelle knight,

seemed happy. often smiling and showing gratitude to the people who helped. >> thank you for your support. >> reporter: the young women never mention ariel castro, the man accused of beating, and holding them hostage for a decade. but they say two months since they escaped, they are slowly returning to a normal life. >> i may have been through hell and back. but i am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face. and with my head held high and my feet firmly on the ground. walking hand-in-hand with my best friend, i will not let the situation define who i am. i will define the situation. i don't want to be consumed by hatred. >> reporter: one of the most touching moments comes from michelle knight. she was reportedly so severely beaten by her captor, she needed

francisco and joins us again this morning. good morning, david. >> reporter: robin, good morning, again, from san francisco. and those images, so telling, showing the passengers racing to get off that jet. you can still see the wreckage over my shoulder here across the bay at the runway of the airport. federal investigators sitting down with the pilots, including the pilot in training. they will do so again today. and among the questions thalt be asking them, is why in the cockpit, they shut down computers and autopilot, 82 seconds before that crash-landing. abc news has learned that overnight the ntsb had its first meeting with the pilots of flight 214, including that pilot in training, his first time trying to land a boeing 777 in san francisco. that word comes just as new images emerge, revealing the passengers and their frantic efforts to get out of the jet alive. you can see the chutes deploy. and immediately, the passengers racing down them. >> my god. that's scary.

>> reporter: the fire breaking out in the front of the plane. and this morning, we now know that that fire started with passengers still in the back. one-on-one with the first firefighters on the scene, they told me how they climbed up the chute, into the smoke-filled cabin, and found mangled seats and the passengers unable to get out. did you see fear? >> it was more shock that i saw. eyes light open. and people looks like they needed assistance. >> reporter: and this morning we are learning more about the other discovery. the two bodies, two teenage girls from china. one found on each side of the plane. the fire chief telling me a member of the team discovering that it looked as though one of the teenagers had been hit by a rescue truck. overnight, the teenagers' families from china, touching down in san francisco. the girls seen in this image, forming a heart with their arms. and amid the heartbreak, one story of true courage emerging,

the flight attendants. one of them seen carrying a child on her back. lee yoon hye, trying to put the fires out herself. one of her colleagues, choking under the weight of the slide. helping the injured, she realized, she, too, had been hurt, breaking her tailbone. in front of the cameras in pain, and back in her uniform. she said her mind was clear from the moment of the crash, thinking to herself, i need to put out that fire. determined to put out that fire and determined to get the passengers off that plane. we did learn overnight of another scare involving a boeing 777 also headed here to san francisco. this time from tokyo. it turned around and returned after four hours of flight time because of a warning about a hydraulic fluid leak. obviously unrelated to this. but you can imagine the jitters when another boeing 777 with problems heading to this airport. let's get more from abc's

aviation consultant. we now know the plane was going in very slowly. what's your theory on why? >> at 82 seconds, george, we know from yesterday, that the crew had the computer, flying both the airplane and the engines. at 82 seconds, they turned off the computers and were manually flying the airplane. so, it was almost as if you're driving down the road, you're going into exit and your take your foot off the accelerator. you continue to steer and you forgot to put your foot on the accelerat accelerator. it wasn't until seven seconds later, that the plane was almost at stall seed, that they realized, we need to fire up. >> the engines was on automatic. it's happening even though there's four pilots onboard? >> four pilots onboard. they had a check captain, one of the senior guys in the whole company. a very experienced pilot. there to keep an eye on. >> how is this going to change training? >> at least with asiana, they have to go back and look at the corporate culture.

to make sure they're adhering to standards. and globally, all airmen will have to make sure they adhere to procedures and the way things ought to be done is clear. >> can't just rely on the machines. thanks very much. now, to the latest on that deadly train accident that devastated a small town in canada. the death toll is rising. and dozens are still missing. yet this morning, we're learning one amazing survivor story. abc's gio benitez has that story for us. >> reporter: this morning, even as investigators look for remains of the nearly 50 people missing, they are also focusing on what caused that runaway train to burst into flames. the lead investigator now says the type of tanker, which is also common in the u.s., is known to puncture. the monstrous blaze that destroyed much of downtown here began just after the parked rain rolled down a hill early saturday morning, landing just feet away from this packed bar. the musi cafe.

>> reporter: this morning, so many calling this the train from hell. investigators right now are trying to identify the bodies. but, robin, they can only rely on dna. >> my goodness. all right. thanks very much. >> so much devastation there. we're going to get the latest on edward snowden, under pressure from the u.s. he may finally be ready to move out of the no-man's land in the moscow airport. but it's not stopped him from speaking out. a new interview with "the guardian" has been released. brian ross is tracking his every move. >> reporter: this could be the week that 30-year-old snowden makes his move out of the moscow airport. diplomats in venezuela and russia, saying they've received his request for asylum. and it's up to him to choose a flight plan. this morning, snowden remains holed up somewhere near or in the moscow airport. out of sight. but a high-profile problem for the u.s. now, "the guardian" newspaper has made public, another part of

the interview with the one-time nsa employee, who accurately predicted how the revelations of the surveillance programs would be received by the united states. >> they're going to say i committed grave crimes. violated the espionage act. they're going to say i've aided our enemies in making them aware of these systems. >> reporter: and that is exactly the case the u.s. has been making, with the latest salvo coming from the white house monday. again warning other countries there will be serious repercussions for any nation that helps snowden. >> he's been charged with a felony or felonies. as such, he should not be allowed to proceed in any further international travel, other than travel that would result in him returning to the united states. >> reporter: the u.s. says snowden has seriously hurt efforts to fight terrorism, by revealing the methods used to listen in on and track terrorists. snowden says he did not start out opposing the programs when

he went to work in the u.s. intelligence community. >> i don't want to live in a world where everything this i say, everything i do, everyone i talk to, every expression of love or friendship is recorded. >> reporter: snowden most likely passed out of russia to venezuela, via the five-time-a-week flight to cuba. that flight left about an hour ago. and he was not on it, according to the personnel staking him out. >> even if he gets on one, it will go over u.s. air space. >> it does. and president obama says he will not scramble jets to go after the hacker. but there are things the u.s. could do. >> thanks very much. to amy robach in for josh, with the rest of the morning's top stories. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with a big headline about the war in afghanistan. president obama is considering

withdrawing all u.s. troops from afghanistan next year. and that would change from the current plan. in recent weeks, the white house has become increasingly frustrated with afghan president hamid karzai. also, a stunning revolution about the hunt for osama bin laden. he was reportedly inside a car, pulled over for speeding in pakistan, not long after 9/11. but the police officer apparently didn't recognize him because bin laden was clean shaven. a leaked report reveals that bin laden wore a cowboy hat in his garden to avoid being spotted by drones. the white house is refusing to cut off aid to egypt. soldiers shot dozens of protesters monday. egypt's interim leader has called for new elections within six months. and closer to home, look at this severe storms dumping record rain in toronto in the middle of the evening rush, stranding thousands of commuters. opening up huge sinkholes and

forcing the subway to close. firefighters had to use boats to rescue hundreds of people onboard. and country singer randy travis is in the hospital in critical condition at this hour. the 54-year-old is suffering from an enlarged heart, brought on by a virus. friends say travis thought he had a bad cold until things took a turn for the worse on sunday. well-wishes are streaming in from across the country. and we send ours his way, as well. finally, another reason to celebrate, the return of the twinkie. hostess says the snack will have a shelf life of 45 days when they hit the stores, as compared to the 46-day shelf life previous cakes. no word on what they're doing. the company says that's proprietary information. >> is the 45 days a good thing?

the hurricane center has this thing crossing barbados later today. and south of puerto rico. hocks over hispaniola. if it makes it past this, it may be in an area to strengthening a little bit. that puts it off the coast of florida, into the bahamas. the zone we don't want to see it and we have to watch carefully for. we're in agreement about the spaghetti models until we get over here to the island. at that point, we have to watch what's left of the storm. baby sitting the storm for the next foreseeable future. here's where the storms are on a roll. minneapolis, chicago, des moines, kansas city, goodland, detroit. two inches of rain in some of the storms.

>> good morning. as we told you on "good morning washington," hyattsville police are looking for two men had tried to rob someone by gunpoint. one of the victims grabbed the attackers gun and as the second suspect approached fired at least one shot. the couple ran off. no one was hurt. an african american worker was underground when he began suffering chest pains. rescuers with saddam up out of the pit. up out ofs lifted him the pit. no word on his condition. >> and murders several crash has northbound lanes blocked at belmont road.

this was shocking for many people. george clooney, now the most eligible one again. superstar and stacy keibler going their separate ways. why they reportedly split. we'll get into it. >> but remaining good friends, we hear. >> both bouncing back. let's get to the latest on the trial of george zimmerman. gripping and emotional testimony on monday. the defense arguing that something he says bolsters the case for zimmerman's innocence. abc's matt gutman has that story. >> reporter: for the first time, trayvon martin's grieving father on the stand. >> our world has just been turned upside-down. tracy martin telling jurors that these pleas for help. >> do you think he's yelling help? >> reporter: heard in the background of this 911 call, were his son screaming. >> i was listening to my son's last cry for help. i was listening to his life being taken.

>> reporter: prosecutors never called martin to the stand. but on monday, the attorneys defending george zimmerman did, suggesting martin had changed his story to help the state's case. after initially telling police the voice he heard was not trayvon's. >> i never said, no, that wasn't my son's voice. i kind of shook my head and said, i can't tell. >> reporter: moments earlier, lead police investigator chris s serino, said he gave a different answer. >> he looked away. and under his breath, as i interpreted, said no. >> reporter: just who was crying for help has become the focus of much of the trial. the prosecutors believe the pleas for help came from 17-year-old martin. but zimmerman's lawyers brought a parade of friends on the stand saying the voice belonged to him. >> it was georgey. >> the voice, obviously changes. i've heard a 250-pound man, i mean, sound like a little girl.

>> reporter: zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming martin attacked him and he shot in self-defense, after those screams for help for ignored. adam pollack, the man who trained zimmerman in kick boxing, told jurors he was not a fighter. >> he didn't know how to effectively punch. he was predominantly fat. not a lot of muscle. >> reporter: but legal analysts say that's not justification for zimmerman pulling the trigger. >> he did testify that george zimmerman was a cream puff. but the cream puff had a gun. >> reporter: this morning, we expect the focus to shift from those phone calls to forensics. a noted pathologist is going to be put on the stand. the defense has put 12 witnesses on the stand so far. they're flying through it. it is possible they could wrap up their case as early as today. the jury could get this case as early as the end of the week. robin? >> we'll see what happens. matt, thank you. we're going to bring in

abc's chief legal affairs anchor, dan abrams. a lot of attention, a lot of emphasis on the 911 call. tracy martin, trayvon's father, so emotional. how is this playing to the jury? >> the defense is calls witness after witness to say it was george zimmerman. even if this jury isn't sure, that's a win for the defense. that's reasonable doubt. so, i think that's all the defense is really trying to do here. calling tracy martin was a risky move. there's two police officers testified that the first time tracy martin heard that type, he did not think it was his son, tr trayvon. we have the police officers' testimony. they wanted to call tracy martin. in conjunction with getting an effort to undermine tracy martin, you get the very emotional, powerful side of tracy martin, the dad, testifying in effect on behalf of trayvon. >> and today, we heard him answer for it. and things continue, with a

forensic expert. what do you think we're going to hear today? >> i think we're going to hear about george zimmerman's injuries and the gunshot wounds. is defensive.rying to sho this the defense wants to re-create, create a 3d recreation on how this could have happened. the judge hasn't ruled on how much of that she's going to let in. but that's how i think the defense wants to wrap all this up. they want to say, this is how we believe it could have occurred. >> matt said moving along quickly here. all along, you have been -- you have said, this is a tough case for the prosecution. >> yeah. >> and you still feel that way? >> yeah. after the prosecution's case, i believe it's hard to imagine, how based on the evidence, that the jurors have seen, they can convict as a legal matter on manslaughter or second-degree murder. but juries are impossible to predict. they make the decisions. and they sometimes choose to go their own way. there's others who say they

wouldn't be ignoring the law. >> the jurors have heard every, single moment of testimony. >> that's right. >> we'll see what happens this week. >> all right. now, to the bizarre story about a woman caught on camera soliciting a hitman to kill her husband. you see her right there. she said killing him, get this, would be easier than divorcing him. and here's another twist. he's fighting to keep her out of prison. abc's john muller has the details. >> he's going to die. you understand that? >> makes me sad. >> reporter: this jaw-dropping video reveals a 21-year-old wife planning a hit on her husband. >> unless you can do it without breaking his back. >> reporter: julia merfeld met with a man she thought was a hitman for hire. >> so, you don't want it done in the house, then? >> it would be messy in the house. >> reporter: providing maps, and a sketch of her home, julia asked the hitman to make the hit look like a robbery.

the hitman was an undercover cop. >> she had approached a co-worker about this idea. and that co-worker felt it serious enough and contacted law enforcement. >> reporter: it's why julia wanted to kill her husband that's most shocking of all. >> it's not that we were getting along. but it was easier than -- as terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him. i didn't have to worry about the judgment of my family. i didn't have to worry about breaking his heart. >> it was too embarrassing for her to be divorced. the new motive was probably greed, for the money. >> reporter: the money she was allegedly after, her husband's life insurance plan, worth $400,000. she used 50,000 of it to pay her hitman, which she planned to play in $9,000 installments. >> you watch both encounters. the first encounter and the second encounter. she's calm. she laughs quite a bit. chuckles, really, at some of the things, whether there's an open casket or closed casket.

>> you want an open casket? >> i don't want an open casket. >> reporter: after that two meetings, julia was arrested and charged with a felony for soliciting murder. she pled guilty. >> she had every opportunity to call it off. >> reporter: now, this mother of two faces six years or more in prison, all because she didn't want a divorce. but her husband, the victim, says he doesn't want her to go to jail at all. for "good morning america," john muller, abc news, new york. >> that's one forgiving husband. >> yeah. >> i like the payment plan. installment situation. what do you have for us? >> we've been talking about how waterspouts have been developing all over the coast. we've been in this a stormy pattern. one developed yesterday around tampa bay. that's a waterspout. they rarely come onshore. when they do, they don't make that much damage. this one came onshore, north tampa bay. did some damage, as well.
